Terms of Service

The rules for using StoryClerk, in plain English. Your story is yours; these terms explain how the service, credits and payments work.

Section 1

Acceptance of these terms

StoryClerk is run by StoryClerk LLC ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using this site or the StoryClerk app, you agree to these terms and to the Acceptable Use Policy, which is part of them. If you do not agree, please do not use StoryClerk.

You must be at least 16 years old. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use StoryClerk only with the permission of a parent or guardian, who accepts these terms for you.

The law that governs these terms is named in the governing law part below.

Section 2

Your account

  • One person per account. Do not share your sign-in details, and keep them safe.
  • Give us accurate information. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account.
  • You need a verified email address before you can buy anything.
Section 3

Credits and plans

StoryClerk runs on credits. Features that use the Writing Assistant or a scan spend credits from your balance. Credits are a usage balance, not money: they have no cash value and cannot be transferred, sold or exchanged.

  • Free includes 50,000 credits a month, with no card required. Unused Free credits do not carry over: each month your balance is refilled to the monthly amount.
  • A one-time card check (nothing is charged) tops a Free balance up to 250,000 credits once. It is not a monthly amount.
  • Standard is $5 a month and includes 2,000,000 credits a month. Pro is $15 a month and includes 10,000,000 credits a month.
  • On Standard and Pro, unused credits roll over from month to month, up to 3 times the monthly amount.
  • Credit packs: 4,000,000 credits for $10. Packs never expire.

We may change plans, allowances and prices going forward. A change does not take away credits you already hold.

Section 4

Payments, final sales and refunds

Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe Managed Payments. Stripe is the seller of record for purchases made at checkout: it takes your payment, calculates and collects any sales tax or VAT, and sends your receipt. Prices are shown at checkout before you pay, and Stripe's own terms apply to the payment there.

Credit packs

Credit packs never expire. All sales are final: credits are delivered immediately and can't be refunded.

Before you buy a pack, you must tick a box that says: "I want my credits delivered now and understand I give up any right to cancel once they are."

If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you normally have 14 days to cancel an online purchase. Because your credits are delivered immediately, ticking the box means you ask for delivery now and give up that right once the credits are delivered. Rights that cannot be given up under the law where you live are not affected.

Subscriptions

Cancel anytime: your plan runs to the end of the month you paid for. Partial months aren't refunded.

Before you subscribe, you must tick a box that says: "I want my monthly credits delivered now and understand I give up any right to cancel once they are."

A subscription renews every month at the price shown at checkout until you cancel. To cancel, change plan or update your payment method, use "Manage subscription" in the app. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the month you paid for, and you keep your plan until then.

Failed payments, refunds and codes

If a payment fails, the app tells you: "Your last payment didn't go through. Update your payment method to keep your monthly credits." If it is not fixed, your plan can end and the monthly credits stop.

Except where the law requires otherwise, purchases are final. Stripe handles refund requests as seller of record. If a purchase is refunded or reversed, the credits it delivered are taken back from your balance. Complimentary codes carry no cash value and are not refundable.

A chargeback or dispute, or an unpaid shortfall after a refund, can place your account on a billing hold. While a hold is in place you cannot make new purchases, redeem codes or claim the card-check bonus. Your credits, plan and content are untouched, and you can keep writing with the credits you have. The app shows: "Purchases are unavailable on this account. Contact support."

Billing questions: [email protected].

Section 5

Acceptable use

How you may use StoryClerk is set out in the Acceptable Use Policy, which is part of these terms.

We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material and any sexual exploitation of minors, including in fiction. That rule is stricter than the law, and it overrides every other provision in these terms. Read the Acceptable Use Policy for the details.

Section 6

Your content and ownership

You own everything you write: your manuscripts, chapters, lore, notes and everything else you put into StoryClerk (your content). We claim no ownership of it.

To run the service for you, we have to store your content and process it for the features you use, which includes sending text to Google Cloud, Google's enterprise cloud, so the Writing Assistant can respond, and keeping a diagnostic copy of Writing Assistant requests for up to 180 days used only if you ask us for support. That is all we do with it. We do not read your manuscripts. It gives us no right to reuse, license, publish or repurpose your content, and we never train AI models on it. How your data is handled is explained on the Trust & Privacy page.

As between you and us, the text the Writing Assistant writes for you belongs to you. Whether copyright law protects such text depends on the country and on how much of the work is yours; see the Copyright & AI Policy.

Adult and mature fiction is welcome within the law. The one exception is sexual content involving minors, which is never allowed; see the Acceptable Use Policy.

You promise that you have the right to upload what you upload, and that doing so does not break the law or anyone else's rights.

Section 7

Deleting content and the Trash

When you delete something, it goes to the Trash. Trash keeps it for 30 days with a visible countdown, then purges it automatically. You can also permanently delete an item from the Trash at any time, after a confirmation. When you delete your account, your data is permanently deleted 30 days after your request (you can cancel until then), and backup copies expire within a further 30 days.

Section 8

Termination and account holds

You can close your account at any time. Closing it does not refund a pack or a month already paid for. Before your data is deleted, you can export it from the app; the 30-day period in the section above applies.

We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, commit fraud, cause chargebacks, or if the law requires it. We will tell you why unless the law stops us. No refund is given when we end an account for a breach.

While a hold is in place you cannot make new purchases, redeem codes or claim the card-check bonus. Your credits, plan and content are untouched. The app shows: "Purchases are unavailable on this account. Contact support."

Zero tolerance: any sexual content involving a minor, or a character presented as a minor, including in fiction, ends in immediate permanent termination of the account, with no refund. This overrides every final-sale or refund provision in these terms. We remove the content, report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and to law enforcement as the law requires, and cooperate with law enforcement. See the Acceptable Use Policy.

Section 9

Disclaimers

StoryClerk is provided "as is" and "as available". The Writing Assistant can be wrong, so check what it tells you. We do not promise that you will be published, that your work is original, that it can be registered for copyright, or that the service suits a particular purpose. Backups are made on a best-effort basis; keep your own exports of work that matters.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

Section 10

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, StoryClerk LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data or lost revenue. Our total liability for any claim relating to StoryClerk is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or US$100.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or rights you have under consumer protection law where you live.

Section 11

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States of America. If we have a dispute, please write to [email protected] first, and we will try to settle it informally within 30 days. If that fails, the dispute goes to a court of competent jurisdiction in the United States. Mandatory consumer rights where you live are not affected.

Section 12

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The "Last updated" date at the foot of this page shows the latest version. For material changes we will email you or show a notice in the app at least 14 days before they apply. If you keep using StoryClerk after a change applies, you accept it.
